In these video's I explain how to create horror sound effects in Cubase using sound processing and effects. In this one particularly I show how I made a jump scare kind of effect by transforming a recording of a ride cymbal being struck with a violin bow into a metallic horror sound effect.

I make these video's because I think it adds to either your music or your film to have custom made sound effects in them instead of all relying on the same royalty free horror sound effects everybody uses. It's also a lot of fun to experiment with this and definitely helps creativity going as a composer (at least, for me).

Of course, there are a thousand ways to go about sound design and I am not saying this is THE way to go, it just happens to be my approach to how to make horror sound effects for your horror film or scary music yourself.

The soundtrack that can be heard very softly in the background is this one: youtube.com/watch?v=ArtkUJ6zRgM It is part of my project called Ghost Stories Incorporated.

The first tutorial video I made on this subject can be found here:

In this video I used Cubase 8 and its pitch shift. I've also used the API 560 EQ by Waves (other EQ's can also be used but I happen to really like this one!) and the standard reverence reverb and delay by Steinberg Cubase.

I also mention the X-noise effect that I use. The reason I don't really go into this effect is because it is not important for this effect in particular, but it is important to remove the hiss. This is something you'd probably want to do for almost any recording made with a condensor microphone.

The microphone I use is an AK47

The video of how I recorded the initial recording will follow soon!

--- About My Project Ghost Stories Incorporated ---

There is something about dark stories that appeals to us. Noises heard in a house once home to a murdered family. Tales of a mysterious creature spotted in the night. A mind haunted by voices coming from seemingly nowhere. These songs are the soundtrack to those type of stories. Inspired by the enigma's found in horrorfilms and thrillers.
