This video shows you how to cook brown rice in a thermos. I’m using a 24 ounce Stanley food jar to cook brown rice. Brown rice takes three times longer to cook on a stove top than white rice, so it’s much easier to cook white rice in a thermos that isn’t very efficient. If you’re planning to cook brown rice, you need to use an insulated food jar that is very efficient at retaining heat, because you need it to stay hot for a longer period of time in order to fully cook the brown rice. In this video, I use a 24 ounce Stanley insulated food jar, which is more efficient than the smaller thermos I normally use for rice. I’ve tried cooking brown rice in a smaller thermos, and it has failed because it lost too much heat too early. To cook brown rice in a thermos, you need to preheat the rice and the inside of the thermos, and then quickly add boiling water and seal it up. You’ll have to experiment with the water to rice ratio. I tried it with one pot rice to two parts of water, and it came out a little mushy. I waited five hours before I opened the thermos, and I think it was probably done after three or four hours. If you experiment with this method a few times, you will find the perfect formula for perfectly cooked brown rice.
If you want to buy a 24 ounce Stanley insulated food jar, here is a link.
