Before you restore a roof coating, it's important to conduct a roof coating adhesion test to make sure the coating is compatible with the roof system.
First, clean the test area with industrial detergent or a roof cleaner. Scrub the surface before rinsing and then let dry.
Next, evenly apply coating to the clean test area and cover with a 4-inch polyester fabric strip and apply a second layer of roof coating over the fabric strip. After the coating has cured, slowly pull off the fabric and use a portable, digital fish scale to measure the pull strength as you remove the fabric strip. Document the pull strength reading and repeat the test in two other clean areas. The average reading must be a minimum of 8 pound force for the 4-inch fabric or 2 pounds force per square inch for the coating adhesion to be acceptable. Otherwise, the coating can separate from the substrate.
