-With the start of a new year, and maybe with some opportunity to get in the workshop, now is a great time to give your trusty workhorses (and maybe even your workshop) a bit of a clean and tidy.

Basic machinery maintenance is the key to reliability, performance and a safe workshop.

Let's have a look at basic benchtop Thicknesser maintenance:

- Remove the dust connection and disconnect from power.
- Make sure the cutter head is at its lowest setting, to give you good access
- Remove the dust hood and use a vacuum (and maybe an old dry paintbrush) to clean as much loose dust & shavings as you can from all areas around and inside the machine.
- Using a small stiff bristle brush (a brass wire brush works well), dipped in some CMT2050 or methylated spirits, remove as much of the built-up pitch & resin as possible from the exposed cutterhead and around the blades. A rag placed under the cutterhead can help catch any excess liquid, although it should dry very quickly.
- Keep rotating the cutterhead to clean completely around all blades and carefully inspect all blades for sharpness and damage.
- Wind the cutterhead up so you can easily access it underneath.
- Use the vacuum again, if you find some new pockets of sawdust.
- Using a rag dipped into the methylated spirit, wipe both infeed and outfeed rollers well, to remove resin & pitch etc. Inspect for damage
- Wipe infeed/outfeed tables and under the machining head, and if required remove all rust. Use a product like Silverglide of G15 to protect the tables.
- If you found any dull or damaged blades, now is the time to change them (or rotate them if you have multi-sided blades or inserts).
- Put everything back together and you are ready to roll.

Now is also a great time to check things like table alignment, but also to order, or replace other worn or damaged parts you may have found during your cleaning.

Remember that new car feeling? Well, if you still have your machine apart, why not treat yourself to a new set of blades or inserts? Carbatec has launched a new range of premium solid carbide inserts to suit spiral and helical cutterheads in the Carbatec range. Many of these will fit other machines too.
