Here I show how to clean oil out of the turbo intercooler, on a Landrover Freelander TD4. After finding that the crankcase filter was blocked and was then pressurising the engine and forcing oil out of the turbo and into the intercooler and the rest of the engine, then the next stage in fixing the smokey engine was to wash out the oil from the intercooler and pipe work.
You can see if you have any oil coming out of the intercooler by disconnecting the turbo output pipe, put it into a cardboard box to catch the oil droplets and then rev the engine. Mine was originally chucking out quite a lot.

and cleaning the intercooler and pipework, no oil was then coming out. Which eliminates that as a source of smoke from the engine.
Cleaning out the intercooler is also often a service requirement after a lot of miles, 96k miles on some cars.
This job requires removing the bumper which is shown. This is also required if you need to change the headlamps. Re-assembly is a straight reverse operation but an assistant to hold the bumper will be required.
A 3/8” drive socket set is useful for getting the bumper off, consider some from Amazon UK: amzn.to/2K9aa1L
