Selecting the right SoundTraxx decoder starts with your model. First, determine which locomotive or rail vehicle you’re installing the decoder in. Once you know your model, choose a SoundTraxx Sound Profile that matches your locomotive's engine type—Steam, GE, EMD, ALCO, EMD-2, Baldwin & Others, or Electric.
Our Tsunami2 and Blunami decoder lines offer the widest variety of sound options and customization. Econami decoders include many popular and commonly requested sounds, making them a great value option, though they feature a smaller sound and feature library than our premium decoders.
After selecting the correct sound profile, the next step is determining which decoder format fits your model. Consider the scale of your locomotive and whether it includes a motherboard with a plug-in connection (such as 21-pin NEM) or if a wired installation is required.
SoundTraxx Sound Profiles Include Over 2.2 Billion Possible Sound Combinations:
Steam – Our original Tsunami2 collection of steam sounds. Only available on older Tsunami2 versions.
Steam-2 – Includes the original Tsunami2 steam collection plus additional whistle options, offering over 2.1 billion possible sound combinations.
Big Steam – Features exclusive recordings of the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014

Diesel – Five diesel sound profiles (ALCO, GE, EMD, EMD-2, and Baldwin & Others) offering over 809,000 possible sound combinations. Diesel sounds are grouped by manufacturer to maximize sound quality and performance.
Electric – Includes a wide range of electric locomotive sounds, from heavy electrics to trolleys and streetcars.
