Join technical illustrator and art instructor Amy Shulke of VanillaArts.com for an unscripted live demonstration of how selects blue Copic Markers markers for a cornflower coloring project using a photo reference and logic. Amy discusses color theory, color value, and how the goal of color selection is not to match the color in a photo exactly but instead to capture the feeling the color gives.
This exercise is for marker selection and is not a coloring or blending tutorial. Color selection is the process marker users struggle with most and it's not taught in classes which provide a set supply list. Seeing a professional artist in action, picking colors and explaining why colors work or fail can be very helpful in developing your own artistry.
Amy offers a different approach to alcohol markers than the standard light-medium-dark blending combinations, encouraging students to layer markers the way fine artists use paint. Texture, value, and desaturation are possible with artist grade markers and colored pencils. You can color with realism... if you can move past a reliance on the same ol' standard light to dark technique.
