Cutting a flush box into an already plastered wall can quickly turn into a repair nightmare if you use the wrong technique. In this video, I demonstrate my tried-and-tested method for chasing a single socket box into a finished wall while keeping plaster damage to an absolute minimum.
You’ll learn why the first step is never to start swinging the bolster chisel, but instead to carefully break the plaster finish around your marked outline. From there, I’ll show you how to establish the correct depth, work into your initial cut, and check that both the back box and capping finish flush (or just below) the plaster surface for a professional installation.
Whether you’re a student, apprentice or experienced electrician looking to improve your chasing technique, these simple tips will help you produce neater work and reduce the amount of making good afterwards.
In this video you’ll learn:
• Why you should score and break the plaster before chasing.
• How to establish the correct depth for a flush box.
• The best way to remove material without damaging surrounding plaster.
• How to square up the edges for a professional finish.
• How to check the back box sits correctly.
• Why capping must finish below the plaster surface.
• Tips for reducing repair work after chasing.
A few extra minutes spent preparing the wall can save a lot of filling, sanding and decorating later.
