The most reliable method to change your Google account on an Android phone is to remove the current default account, add your preferred account first, and then re-add any secondary accounts.
Step 1 – Backup and Sync Your Data
Before removing your Google account, ensure all data linked to your current account—like Gmail, contacts, calendar, and app settings—is synchronized.
Go to Settings Accounts and backup Manage
accounts, select your Google account, and tap Sync account, ensuring all toggles for apps and services are enabled
This prevents data loss and ensures you can seamlessly restore it after switching accounts.
Step 2 – Remove the Existing Default Google Account
To set a new default, you must sign out of the current default account:
Open Settings.
Navigate to Google Manage Accounts on this Device (or Passwords & accounts / Accounts and backup, depending on the device)
Select the Google account you want to remove.
Tap Remove account, then confirm.
If it’s the only Google account on the device, you may need to enter your device’s pattern, PIN, or password for verification
Removing the default account will temporarily disconnect your phone from Google services. Locally stored data remains intact, but synced data will disappear from the device until you sign back in.
Step 3 – Add Your New Default Google Account
Once the previous account is removed:
Go back to Settings Google.
Tap Sign in to your Google Account or Add another account
Enter the email and password for the account you want as your primary/default account.
Complete any two-factor authentication if required.
Tap I Agree to accept Google’s Terms of Service.
