Cerakote is a tough and durable paint-like epoxy-based coating used in coloring and rust-proofing knives and other mechanical parts. In this video, knife maker Walter Sorrells shows how he applies Cerakote in the making of one of his own knives. The knife is a skeleton-type design, meaning that it has no handle scales (no wood, bone, Micarta, etc.), just bare metal...making it a perfect canvas for the application of a coating. In this case, the coating is black, but these types of coatings come in a nearly infinite palette of colors, giving you the ability to customize knives in a variety of creative ways.
The video shows surface prep, mixing, application and curing including tips for a number of ways of saving money in what can be a fairly expensive process. This process is great for knife makers, but it can also be done to your personal knives...if you have the right gear.
