We built a solid wood exterior door from ordinary framing lumber, using traditional frame-and-panel construction with floating solid-wood panels and large bridle-style joints. In this video we go through the entire process—from milling the lumber and making a scale model to cutting the joinery, assembling the door, finishing it, and finally hanging it in place.
The interesting part of this project wasn’t just making a door, it was understanding how a traditional solid wood door is actually put together, why the panels need to float, and how the rails and stiles work together to keep the whole thing square and strong.
