You can effectively block spam calls on Android by enabling the built-in caller ID and spam protection features, using the Google Phone app, and optionally using Google Voice to filter or block unwanted numbers automatically
Step 1 — Use the Google Phone App
Install and set as default: Ensure the "Phone by Google" app is installed and set as your default dialer. Go to Settings Apps Default apps Phone app to confirm this.
Enable Caller ID & Spam Protection:
Open the Google Phone app, tap the three-dot menu icon, then go to Settings Caller ID & Spam.
Toggle See Caller ID & Spam on to see warnings about potential spam calls.
Optionally, enable Filter Spam Calls. This will automatically send suspected spam to voicemail and keep them out of your main call screen
Step 2 — Blocking Specific Numbers
Open your call history in the Google Phone app.
Tap on the number you want to block.
Choose Block/Report spam, and confirm. This prevents calls or messages from that number and reports it to help improve spam detection for others
Step 3 — Manually Block Unknown or Persistent Callers
To block all unknown calls not in your contacts:
Open Settings Blocked Numbers in the Phone app.
Toggle Block unknown numbers on. Calls from unsaved numbers will go straight to voicemail, reducing spam interruptions
Step 4 — Use Google Voice for Advanced Filtering
Download Google Voice, set it up with a forwarding number, and enable spam filtering.
Google Voice marks suspected spam calls and messages, sending them to a spam folder, and even plays a "number not in service" tone to blocked callers
Step 5 — Optional: Use Call Screen on Pixel Phones
Pixel devices allow Call Screen, where Google Assistant answers unknown calls and transcribes responses in real-time.
Configure in Settings Spam and Call Screen Call Screen and choose protection levels:
Maximum: Declines unknown and spam calls automatically.
Medium: Screens suspicious calls and declines spam.
Basic: Only declines known spam
