Are you looking for ways to make the electromagnetic spectrum accessible, relevant, and exciting to your students? In this webinar for 4th–8th grade educators, Smithsonian astronomer Kimberly Arcand speaks about her career in “data visualization” - translating bits and bytes from telescopes and observatories into pictures and stories that bring astrophysical phenomena to life. You'll also get a hands-on walkthrough of a suite of teaching and learning materials featuring Arcand's work (http://s.si.edu/supernova); an online interactive, 360° video, classroom activities, and more.

Dr. Kimberly Arcand is an expert in astronomy visualization and has been a pioneer in 3D printing and extended reality applications in this field. Kim began her career in molecular biology and public health before moving to NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory with the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian in 1998. In addition to being an award-winning producer and director, she is an expert in studying the perception and comprehension of high-energy data visualization across the novice-expert spectrum. Her latest works include augmented reality, holograms and data sonification as applied to astrophysics data sets. Kim has co-written seven popular science books, including two children’s books.

This is the third in a series of three “Smithsonian Teacher Training: How to Be a Scientist” webinars featuring the research and contributions of Smithsonian women scientists. View the other two here:
