If you are concerned about using spray foam or want to avoid foam products, It is possible to air seal and insulate the rim joist connection without the use of spray foam or rigid foam products by specifying an airtight smart vapor retarder membrane, however, it requires the highest level of detail and craftsmanship. Smart vapor retarder membranes prevent vapor from diffusing into the walls and rim joist from the interior but allow moisture to dry out of the assembly from the stud cavities to the interior if relative humidity within the wall exceeds 60%, unlike standard polyethylene which will trap moisture. Taping the joints of the membrane forms a reliable air barrier, as long as every lap and penetration is perfectly sealed. This allows for a wider range of insulation types to be used in isolation, such as mineral wool, fiberglass, wood fiber, and cellulose.
