DeepMind's "Dreamer" AI system has achieved a remarkable breakthrough by teaching itself to find diamonds in Minecraft without any human guidance. Unlike previous systems that relied on watching gameplay videos or following programmed instructions, Dreamer uses reinforcement learning and builds an internal "world model" to imagine potential outcomes before acting.
Starting from scratch in randomly generated worlds, Dreamer learned to gather wood, craft tools, and eventually mine deep underground - a complex sequence of interconnected steps. After 9 days of continuous play, the AI successfully mined its first diamond, demonstrating that AI can develop general knowledge and apply it to new situations independently.
Scientists believe this advancement towards general AI could eventually help robots learn complex tasks in real-world environments where trial and error is much costlier.
