A year after 23-year-old Ruben Martinez was killed in South Texas, the public learned for the first time that it was an ICE agent who shot him.

His best friend, Josh Orta, was the only witness who challenged the official account of what happened the night of the shooting, saying Ruben wasn’t a threat to the officer.

Months later, when Orta finally learned who killed his friend, the revelation shook him. He died in a fiery car crash only a few hours after learning the new information.

Their mothers say the government's obfuscation didn’t just hide the truth, it deepened their grief.
