Reza Shah – who was born Reza Khan to a Caspian Mazanderani family – launched a Persianization campaign that aimed to eliminate the cultural identities of non-Persians, including ethnic Mazanderanis. Turkic peoples were most targeted, even though many of the architects and most ardent supporters of this forced assimilation policy were ethnically Azerbaijanis who had rejected their Turkic ethnicity in favor of a Persian identity. His son and successor Mohammed Reza Shah once alluded positively to Aryan Race theory when he described Iran as just like the “other Aryan nations in Europe”. Both Pahlavi Shahs fostered this amalgamation of Persian exceptionalism and the radical secularism that came with it, and proceeded to brutally suppress any discontent brought by the nation’s influential Islamic clerics and the broader Iranian masses. This culminated with Mohammad Reza’s deposition in 1979 and the installation of an ultra-conservative Islamic theocracy in his stead, ushering in a Persia without a monarchy for the first time in recorded history and an unstable future.
