The Durand Agreement was signed in 1893, delineating his entire border with British India. The Amir did not have much leverage to assert himself in these negotiations. Many Pashtun tribes were split by the new border and this has since gone on to be a source of irredentism to the present day, negatively impacting Afghan-Pakistani relations. The Afghan state is compromised of many different ethnicities but the demographic majority as well as the ruling elites have been Pashtuns. Now this ethnic group which made up the bedrock of the state was divided by the border. As a result, a massive rebellion erupted on the tribal frontier in 1897 against the Durand Line that now separated the tribes from their kinsmen. Although eventually put down, it required the effort of 60,000 colonial troops which even included a young Winston Churchill. Despite his displeasure with the Durand Agreement, the Amir chose not to do anything, knowing like his grandfather Dost Mohammad did during the 1857 Mutiny, that the British would prevail. He declined to support rebels of the Afridi and Orakzai Pashtuns when they petitioned him directly. For the Pashtuns of the frontier, neither the Afghan state nor the British Raj looked out for their interests.
