A short video discussing the marriage between Jefferson Davis and Sarah Knox Taylor, the daughter of 12th United States President Zachary Taylor. Long before the Civil War or when Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederacy or even Zachary Taylor became chief executive both Davis served under Taylor in the military.
Davis fell in love with Taylor's daughter, and while the Taylors initially forbade the marriage the two eventually wed. Sarah would never serve as First Lady of the Confederate States as she died of either malaria or yellow fever three months into the marriage. Though devastated, Davis eventually remarried. He married Varina Howell.
Though Colonel Zachary Taylor initially blamed Davis for his daughter's death the two would reconcile after serving together in the Mexican-American War. Afterwards, the two would remain friends even as they entered politics and stood on opposite sides of the political divide. Davis was a lifelong Democrat and Taylor a member of the Whig Party. The Davises were regular guests at the White House and Zachary and Margaret treated them like family. When Zachary Taylor died in 1850 the couple was at his bedside. Some even claim that Zachary Taylor's last words were spoken to Davis.
