A few years ago I surprised everyone when I discovered a book that explained the Yume Kojo festival down to the most minute detail. Things that were never before known were brought to light, including many of the 250 promotional items made for Yume Kojo. The Only One we all knew about was a video game co produced by Nintendo and Fuji TV called Doki Doki Panic. Which a year and a half later became Super Mario Bros 2 in the West, But it wasn’t the first Mario game that Nintendo and Fuji TV worked on together. In this “very special episode” I’ll provide an in-depth detailed breakdown of a partnership that altered the course of gaming history and produced a rare and somewhat forgotten promotional item. This is All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.

Doki Doki Panic and its backstory are fairly well known by now, but even to the casual observer one thing sticks out, and that’s that Nintendo produced a game on behalf of Fuji TV, one of Japan’s largest networks and number 8 on the dial in Tokyo. Why would Nintendo go through all that work of making a game for a TV station? Well, Fuji TV and Nintendo already had good partnership going prior to that game, and it’s never really talked about.

The All Night Nippon Story begins over 50 years ago. Nippon Broadcasting System developed a live overnight radio show that would feature current top artists hosting, holding interviews and performing live music. The show debuted on October 2nd, 1967. Broadcasting 7 days a week, from 1 to 5 a.m., the show gained popularity quickly as the go to destination for top musical entertainment. Throughout the late 60s and 1970s the show standardized the formula of rotating hosts and formats based on different days of the week. With a hosting stint ranging anywhere from a few weeks to more than a decade, depending on the viability of the career of the personality on air.

A plan was put in place to mark the milestone in a unique way. Something unique that would celebrate the show’s history and please the fans!
