Every day, thousands of vessels remain alongside ports for hours—or even days—while loading cargo, embarking passengers, or undergoing maintenance. During this time, most ships continue running their auxiliary diesel generators to supply onboard electrical power. Although effective, this traditional approach consumes large amounts of fuel, produces greenhouse gas emissions, increases noise levels, and raises operating and maintenance costs.
Shore Power, also known as Onshore Power Supply (OPS) or Cold Ironing, offers a cleaner and more efficient alternative. Instead of generating electricity onboard, a vessel connects directly to the local electrical grid through a dedicated high-voltage shore connection. Once connected, the ship can safely shut down its auxiliary generators while all onboard electrical systems continue operating normally.
