Have we become more concerned with keeping everything in order than allowing the Holy Spirit to have His way?
In this message, Evangelist Alex Parkinson shares a story from when he was a newly saved Christian. A group of young people—rough around the edges but hungry for God—began passionately pursuing Jesus. Their worship wasn’t always polished, quiet, or comfortable, and sometimes their hunger challenged the religious traditions around them.
Then one Sunday, a genuine move of God broke out.
The altars were filled. People were responding to God. The Holy Spirit was moving powerfully.
But in the middle of that moment, Alex and another young man moved a plant on the platform—and a deacon became furious:
“DON’T MOVE MY PLANT! YOU NEVER MOVE THE PLANTS!”
Something shifted in the atmosphere.
It’s possible to become so attached to our traditions, preferences, programs, schedules, and ways of doing church that we fail to recognize what God is doing right in front of us.
Scripture warns us:
“Do not quench the Spirit.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:19
And:
“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God…” — Ephesians 4:30
The Holy Spirit is not merely a feeling, an atmosphere, an emotion, or a force. He is a Person—the third Person of the Godhead. He speaks (Acts 13:2), He leads (Romans 8:14), He teaches (John 14:26), He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30), and His activity can be resisted and quenched.
The question isn’t simply, “Did we have church?”
The question is: Did we give the Holy Spirit room to do what HE wanted to do?
May we never become so familiar with our traditions that we value the “plants” more than His presence.
