Reclamation’s Wildland Fire Program's "smart" way to reduce wildfire risks.

As wildfire seasons grow longer and more intense, the Bureau of Reclamation’s California-Great Basin Region is stepping up with a proactive Wildland Fire Program—led by John Hutchings, our Regional Wildland Fire Coordinator.
From the hillsides of Shasta Dam to the valleys of Kern County, Hutchings is working to reduce wildfire risk by thinning overgrown vegetation and creating fuel breaks—not with a fire crew, but through smart land and watershed management.
“What genuinely excites me most about this job is being part of a solution,” Hutchings says. “My job stimulates me, motivates me, and challenges me. I absolutely love what I do.”
