NERCscience | How quickly could a massive Antarctic glacier collapse? | Thwaites Glacier Collaboration @NERCscience | Uploaded April 2018 | Updated October 2024, 3 hours ago.
Thwaites Glacier is losing about fifty billion tons of ice per year.
The collapse of the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica could significantly affect global #sealevels. It already drains an area roughly the size of Britain or the U.S. state of Florida, accounting for around four per cent of global sea-level rise —an amount that has doubled since the mid-1990s.
The Thwaites Glacier Collaboration - a joint UK-US research programme launched Monday 30 April is one of the most detailed and extensive examinations of a massive #Antarctic #glacier ever undertaken.
In this video, hear from Ted Scambos, Senior Research Scientist from the National Snow and Ice Data Centre and David Vaughan, Director of Science from the British Antarctic Survey about the research and how this work is a race against time.
Watch the video to learn more about how this research will help us adapt to these changes.
