Learn how organizing values into strong, connected shapes can transform your drawings. This approach improves readability, adds depth, and commands attention.

The lesson includes a project to help you apply these concepts by creating a portrait study using defined value ranges. This hands-on practice will help solidify your ability to organize values effectively for better compositions.

Organize values into strong, connected shapes to improve readability, depth, and focus in your drawings. Group your values into larger shapes—like oceans, lakes, and rivers—to unify them. Don't include floaters unless necessary. Design shapes that balance 2D composition and 3D form. For your assignment, draw the provided sculpture. Use five values if you're a beginner or seven or more if you're advanced. Focus on interconnected shapes and how they interact.
