Or the outcome of voluntary exchange?
R. A. Radford, an economist and former prisoner of war, observed something remarkable. In a German POW camp, cigarettes became money. No decree mandated their use. No authority enforced it. Prisoners converged on cigarettes because they were widely accepted, divisible, and portable.
Across societies, money has developed to solve a simple problem. Trade among strangers is difficult. Barter requires a coincidence of wants. Money removes that friction. It allows individuals to specialize, exchange, and cooperate at scale.
If money can emerge without central direction, what happens when the State takes control? When authorities decide how much money circulates, what form it takes, and how it can be used, the nature of exchange itself begins to change.
