This Pokémon Gold and Silver documentary details the development of the monster collecting RPG Pokémon Gold and Silver and goes behind the scenes of their creation. Discover more about development studio Game Freak and Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri’s vision of creating the ultimate Pokémon games. The documentary also explores all the design decisions that Game Freak made and shows why making the games as accessible as possible was a very important factor.
It also takes a close look at all the hurdles Game Freak had to go through. After six years of creating Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, the team was completely exhausted. On top of that the studio was running out of money, pulling certain developers away from the initial phases of Silver and Gold’s development. Additionally, Satoshi Tajiri, who was directing Silver and Gold, was being overwhelmed with other tasks because of Pokémon’s success. This caused significant development delays and Junichi Masuda eventually had to step in and help direct the games. While the initial Jotho region map was a compressed version of all of Japan, Junichi wanted to focus on older cities such as Kyoto, Nara and Osaka and changed the entire layout of the map. Furthermore, at one point, Gold and Silver counted over 350 Pokémon designs, but the team removed at least 100 Pokémon for the final release. Lastly, the main reason Pokémon Crystal was made is because Nintendo needed a good launch title for a certain peripheral.
