What has online dating changed about modern relationships? In this video, I begin discussing Marie Bergström’s The New Laws of Love: Online Dating and the Privatization of Intimacy (Polity, 2022), looking at her central thesis: dating has become privatized.

Through quotes and commentary, I discuss how dating apps have separated partner search from ordinary social life: family, friends, work, community, and shared social networks. Bergström’s argument helps us understand why dating today can feel more private, solitary, and detached from the social worlds that once shaped romantic relationships.
