So we start with a fresh page, do not look at your old book description, and craft something new. Once you have that new text… where does it go? For several of the platforms you go back into your listing when you put the original description and then click save or publish. Others aren’t as straightforward. Later in this video, I’ll show you how to update your book description on the major platforms. I have chapters below that you can jump to.
How often should you optimize?
When I first heard this advice it was to update monthly or quarterly.
Yeah, with a full-time job and a life and writing the next book. That didn’t happen for me.
So now if I can update them once a year, I’m happy with that.
How do we run this test?
That’s up to you. With this optimization, you aren’t running a true A/B test. This would be having 50% of people who land on your book page see one description, then the other 50% see the other option, and based on which one results in more sales you know if A or B won. Nope.
What you can do is test tag lines and copy with your social media ad copy. These usually give you an idea of which copy is driving more clicks, but you usually can’t see the sales. Seeing what drives clicks is a good indicator though.
You could do a time test. One month you have book blurb A, the next month is book blurb B. But maybe you did a better job driving people to the book page in month A and had other things come up in month B. It’s hard to control all the factors.
One way to make it easier on you is to have several options ready to go so it isn’t the last day of the month (or quarter or year) and you’re scrambling for some new book copy.
Should you update all formats at the same time?
Up to you. One control could be to have your print book keep the same description and give your eBook the new copy. But, people who prefer print over ebook and vice versa are different readers. So maybe it tells you what works overall or what just works for that genre. Measure everything with a whopping grain of salt. One of those super big grains of salt.
One big tip is for you to craft this description in a Word doc or Google Doc. Proof it. Edit it. And then copy and paste into the publishing platform. Don’t erase your current description and then stare at the blank screen and wing it. Also, keep your original description somewhere so you can always revert back if it somehow was the best description ever.
If I put the description on my back cover copy, when should I update that?
You can update it simultaneously, or you can give it a few iterations, see which one works best and then do one update a year.
So now that you have new copy and some idea of how you’ll declare on a winner over the other with all your big grains of salt, how do you actually update the description
