1973 saw Benny Parsons win his first NASCAR Cup Series championship. It also saw a major geopolitical crisis pop up for the United States as President Richard Nixon decided to aid Israel in the Yom Kippur War. That lead many foreign nations to release the "oil weapon." Soon enough, the United States had an energy crisis on their hands. They needed to reduce gas consumption. The target for government shutdown? Motorsports, including NASCAR. As a series already facing trials and tribulations, a shutdown threatened the existence of NASCAR entirety.
