A musical theme can be used to represent a character, object, place, or any other element used in a story. Music has been used to enhanced storytelling since ancient times, but it really wasn't until opera composers the late 1800's began using musical themes that the music took a more active role in helping to tell the story. In this video, I will illustrate how themes are used in operas and film by examining film composer John Williams' scores to the Star Wars films. Copyrighted material used under fair use.
