🎬 Fibre Film Club: The Yarn Manufacturing Process – Is the Cost of Wool Valid?
Have you ever picked up a beautiful skein of wool yarn, looked at the price and thought, “How can wool possibly cost THAT much?” 🐑💰
In this episode of Fibre Film Club, we’re following wool on its incredible journey from sheep to skein and taking a closer look at everything that goes into producing the yarn we love to knit and crochet with.
We’ll look at the process step by step, including:
🐑 Shearing – where it all begins, and why the quality of the fleece matters.
🧺 Sorting & Grading – separating the fleece according to fibre quality, length, colour and suitability.
🫧 Scouring & Cleaning – removing lanolin, dirt, vegetable matter and other material from the raw wool.
🪮 Carding – opening and aligning those fibres and preparing them for the next stage.
🧶 Combing & Preparation – depending on the type of yarn being produced, fibres may be further aligned and prepared to create the desired characteristics.
🌀 Spinning – transforming loose fibres into actual yarn, including the decisions that affect thickness, strength and texture.
➰ Plying – combining spun strands to create the final yarn structure and influence its strength, appearance and behaviour.
🌈 Dyeing – exploring when and how colour enters the process, and the additional work involved in producing those gorgeous shades we all love.
🧵 Winding & Finishing – turning the manufactured yarn into the balls, hanks or skeins that eventually make their way to our local yarn shops.
🔍 Quality Control & Packaging – the final checks before that yarn can be labelled, packaged and sent out into the world.
And then comes the BIG question:
💰 Is the cost of wool actually valid?
Are we paying too much for our yarn?
Or, when we consider the sheep, the farmers, shearing, transportation, processing, machinery, energy, labour, dyeing, quality control, packaging, distribution and everything else involved, does that expensive-looking skein suddenly make a lot more sense?
We’ll follow the wool all the way through the manufacturing process and see just how much work, time and expertise is hidden inside that ball of yarn.
