Protein is having a quite a moment and seems to be in everything these days—but do we actually need more of it?

Until recently, the recommended daily allowance in the United Sates was 0.8 grams per kilogram. (Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. raised it to 1.2 to 1.6 g/kg.) But the question remains: do people actually need more protein?
