In the late 1960s, Arab-led Sudan actively supported Palestinian factions hostile to Israel. In response, Mossad launched "Operation Tarzan". They sent operatives to the deep jungles of South Sudan to secretly train and arm the Anyanya separatist rebels. By doing this, Israel tied down the Sudanese military in a civil war, preventing Khartoum from sending troops to fight Israel in the Middle East.
