In 2018, the Morelia Police Department in Mexico faced public scrutiny when the arrest of a teenager went viral. The arrest followed department protocol and was justified, but without body-worn camera evidence to provide transparency, it was the agency’s word against the public’s, and public trust in the department declined.
To ensure clear and accurate documentation of police-citizen interactions moving forward, Morelia PD decided to invest in body-worn cameras. The agency equipped officers with Axon body-worn cameras and quickly found that, in addition to providing secure evidence capture, the technology enhanced transparency by giving citizens greater insight into the valuable work the PD was doing to protect the community, helping to rebuild trust.
