Meyer Lansky is possibly one of the most important figures in the history of organized crime. With a career extending from 1911 to 1970, he was involved in most major crime rings in the United States, Mexico, and Cuba.
Meyer had a renowned ensemble of Jewish mobsters who followed him around including Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, his "Bugs and Meyer Gang" partner. The Jewish mob was on par with the Italian mafia in New York and across the country at the time.
He established gambling empires all over the world and was possibly the wealthiest mobster since Al Capone. Despite being Jewish, he wielded more power in the mafia than anyone besides Lucky Luciano. Meyer put a lot of money into his offshore companies and kept a low profile in his senior years. Lansky died of lung cancer on January 15, 1983
