I wrote my dissertation with the express intent of formulating a method to interpret historical violence that can be applied to such epidemics. While I focused on the Southwest during the frontier period of 1848-1919, I do hint at a possible answer to the question of how mass shootings became such a recent problem. There is a deeper explanation that unites these problems and offers a greater understanding of this epidemic of violence, which I hope my dissertation can illustrate how to go about finding. I cannot offer definite answers in the present, hence why I look to the past, but I can begin to construct the analytical tools necessary for doing so in the future.
