Most people hear "farming" and picture tractors and hundreds of acres. Market gardening is different: under five acres (often under two), vegetables grown intensively, sold directly to customers at retail prices. A well-run market garden can return over $100,000 per acre. A conventional farm might return a few hundred.
After a decade interviewing hundreds of farmers, here's what actually determines success: what you grow (Salanova lettuce at 70% margins on a single bed), how you manage costs (Ellen Polishuk's benchmark: $150K–$200K gross to take home $50K — about 50% goes to labor), how small you start (one farmer calculated full tunnel setup for ~$3,000), and whether your market supports premium pricing.
The pattern from the podcast: almost every successful farmer had a terrible first year. $3,000 total sales. $6,000. $15,000. The ones who treated year one as tuition — not failure — turned it around by years three to five. The ones who quit after year one quit before the business even started.
