In this clip from our visit with Mark Morton, the American GRAMMY®-nominated lead guitarist of groove metal titans Lamb of God, Mark opens up about his lifelong obsession with tone chasing and shares how his decades-long relationship with MESA/Boogie actually began. Sitting down at the Gibson Garage in Nashville to celebrate the launch of his signature Les Paul, Mark takes us back to a phone call he made to Petaluma in search of a very specific 6L6 power tube — the kind of deep-in-the-weeds detail only a real tone obsessive would chase down.
“I love tone chasing. I love it with guitars. I love it with amps and gear. It’s just the greatest quest. It’s been my life… I was calling Petaluma to try and find a very specific 6L6 tube, and the guy on the other end of the phone was like, ‘You want the Svetlana’s? Those are hard to find. That matters to you?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, they don’t sound as good as these other ones I found.’ He was like, ‘You can hear that?’” — Mark Morton.
Mark explains how that one nerdy phone call — a hunt for the right-shaped Svetlana 6L6 tubes that subtly changed the character of his amp — turned into the start of his long-running relationship with the team at MESA/Boogie.
