White rhinos are actually the most populous of the world’s five rhino species. Yet this apparent abundance conceals a fragile reality. According to the most recent data, their global population stands at approximately 15,752 individuals. These rhinos are divided into two sub-species: the southern white rhino and the northern white rhino. The southern variant is what makes up virtually all of today's population. The northern white rhino, tragically, is considered functionally extinct: only two females remain, and they cannot reproduce naturally. Their fate now relies entirely on cutting-edge science, techniques like IVF and embryo transfer are being explored using genetic material preserved from deceased males.
