NAVY Productions | How Jet Engine Testing Impacts the Performance of Aircraft Carriers @navyproductions | Uploaded November 2022 | Updated October 2024, 13 hours ago.
Fighter jets aboard a US Navy aircraft carrier are equipped with jet engines that allow them to move at incredibly high speeds. These jet fighters can be launched onto the flight deck in the middle of the sea. High-speed jet engines are also tested on board. Does it make the aircraft carrier go any faster?
Let us consider the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, for example – they are the most dominant warships in the US Navy fleet. The maximum speed of this war vessel is about 35 knots. The ship must use most of the 190MW it generates to reach this maximum speed. So, we can assume that it uses around 180 MW to propel itself at its highest speed.
Force is a ratio of power to speed. At constant speed, the force will be equal to zero. Simultaneously, the drag of the ship is equal to its thrust. The drag force, therefore, will be 10MN.
The strongest jet engine a carrier can be equipped with is about 50kN. This value is much smaller than an average carrier’s propelling force. The jet engine can increase the carrier’s speed from 10MN to 10.05MN, which is a 0.5% increase in speed. This 0.5% increase in speed does not correlate to a 0.5% increase in movement. #aircraftcarrier #usnavy #jetengine
