Imagine a tire sitting in a landfill for up to 4,000 years.
Something we barely notice every day could outlive generations. For decades, discarded tires were seen as a stubborn pollutant — stacked, buried, or burned.
But today, that same rubber is being shredded, heated, and blended into some of the most durable roads on the planet. Captain Discovery goes inside the facilities where millions of worn-out tires are transformed into asphalt additives, playground surfaces, and construction materials.
Along the way, we follow plastic bags reborn as pellets and glass bottles crushed, melted, and reshaped into new products. What once seemed like waste becomes raw material again — but only through complex sorting systems, intense heat, and careful engineering.
So how does trash turn back into infrastructure?
Let’s take a closer look inside How It’s Made: Recycled Tires, Plastic Bags, Recycled Glass.
Let’s open the box and take a closer look.
