To go from fusion experiments to power plants using fusion energy, we need to solve the ‘plasma exhaust’ challenge – the process of removing excess heat without damaging any components. To tackle this challenge, MAST Upgrade is equipped with a world-first exhaust system, the Super-X Divertor. The concept for the Super-X divertor originally came from the Institute for Fusion Studies group at the University of Texas.

Watch this short animation to find out how it works.
