HOW I WRITE MUSIC:
▻ Usually starts with riff or chorus idea
- Record idea & insert rough drums
- Idea sometimes becomes the intro riff
- Build rest of song around it
▻ Begin thinking about mood of song
- Write first verse to support chorus (setting the tone)
- Analyze whether or not a pre-chorus is needed
- Pre-choruses depend on verse-to-chorus transition
▻ The writing continues…
- I like to change riffs of new verses & choruses
- Think of ways to slightly modify original riff
- Combo of jamming & listening to my heart
- After verses & choruses I write the bridge
- If it feels right, there will usually be a guitar solo
▻ Wrapping up the song
- Usually end song the way it started (main riff)
- Theme of outro does depend on the song
- If song doesn’t have intro, it’s created at this point
▻ Details of writing guitar solos
- I can’t shred – compensate writing slow & melodic
- Listen to bridge seeing if any melodies come to me
- Usually will start jamming to get ideas flowing
- My favorite solos are ones that tug on heartstrings
- I like a unique mix of uplifting & almost melancholy
- Write rough draft, then find ways to spice it up a bit
- Spice up with fast runs, better transitions & feeling
- When writing, more focused on melody lines
- Final recording involves playing with more feeling
- Record my solos on my 6-string Jackson guitar
▻ Order of instrument appearance
- First focus on rhythm guitars, w/ drums underneath
- Sometimes will track BG guitars along with rhythms
- After finishing skeleton of song – fill in other guitars
- Usually afterwards record guitar solo (if needed)
- Record bass to support the guitars
- Add in any extras such as synths or orchestra
- Record vocals if needed for my own project
▻ Band writing (current process)
- Dropbox instrumental to my drummer and vocalist
- Drummer records his own take on a drumless version
- Vocalist writes & records his takes over the track
