Writing a screenplay is a lot more complicated than what I originally thought. The first time I wrote a movie script, I literally sat down at my computer and started typing away with no plan. I had an idea and I wanted to write it. I thought it was that simple.
Well, somehow, I managed to finish the film but I think it was mainly because I was so excited that I was finally writing again. Anyway, it was an awful script, haha :)
These days, I like to structure my screenwriting sessions a little better, and in this video, I continue this short video series on how to write a film script. I hope you find it helpful.
Today I share how identifying the theme is my most important first step.
After I know what the screenplay will be about, I tend to start with the Story Circle to flesh out the characters- I do this quickly as I’ve found that going with my gut allows me to avoid overthinking things.
After I’ve discerned where my character starts, their wants, the price they pay for getting what they want, and where they end up- I move on to the beat sheet.
