How do you use vellums in your planners?

I get asked about vellum usage ideas all the time and I think this question comes up because most people are afraid of messing it up. I've been there too so I understand. But over the years, I feel like the planners and artwork that I get most inspired by are the ones that feel “messy” and free.

There are different ways of expressing ourselves, and I think we don’t really know what that is exactly until we put something on paper. As with anything in life, we can’t always know what the final picture would look like, we can only make one decision at a time.

So I encourage you to tear up those vellum sheets, stickers, and just put something down on paper to start figuring it out one step at a time.

But here are the steps that I rely on to make it easy for me:

1. I start from the 4 corners of the vellum as I know they will for sure look good on corners of the blank pages in my planner. (Also, I designed these sheets, so I already know I will like them haha)
2. If the graphic is more solid, then I glue them down. If they are a bit more translucent (with more white space) I use them as peek-a-boo style veils to add more interest to the spread and make them interactive.
3. After the 4 corners are used up, then I go through the remaining graphics and pick out the “clusters” of florals. I can either use them as very large “stickers” by gluing them down, or trim it with a paper trimmer to create a straight edge on them and create more “peek-a-boo” moments. (I am biased towards peek-a-boo lol. I love them so much)
4. Once all the vellums have been put down, I use larger stickers and overlap them with the vellum. I love the different scales coming together to form the pages.
5. Writing on the pages with decoration already in place, vs writing on a blank page are two completely different experiences for me. It’s comparable to the difference between working in an eclectically designed space with all my favorite things vs working in an all white minimalistic office. There are advantages for both depending on what you have to do.
