In today’s video, I’m excited to showcase the latest upgrades I’ve made to my PowerPoint VSTO add-in . Over the last three months, I’ve completely refactored the add-in, adding some powerful new features and tackling challenging technical hurdles.
Here’s what we’ll explore in this video:
✨ New Features
Dual WebView2 Integration:
A WebView2 instance inside the PowerPoint task pane.
Another instance in a WPF application UI, which I call the "Animation Manager Panel."
Real-time syncing of shape information between both instances.
HTML Integration:
A lightweight HTML file replicates PowerPoint shapes using JavaScript, showcasing their properties dynamically.
Named Pipes for Communication:
Seamless data transfer between the PowerPoint add-in and the WPF application using Named Pipes.
Logs and configuration details to show how the data flows efficiently between systems.
Advanced Shape Manipulation:
Detailed information fetching for single shapes, groups, and multi-selection.
Group-level shape details and customization options.
🚧 Challenges and Work in Progress
Shared Dependency Injection:
Successfully configured DI within the add-in but still resolving issues for the WPF application.
Inserting WebView2 as an ActiveX Control:
This feature has been a tough nut to crack! While the control initializes in PowerPoint slides, certain critical steps remain unresolved.
📐 Productivity Tip: Microsoft PowerToys
I also share a handy tool that’s been a lifesaver during development—Microsoft PowerToys. Specifically, the Screen Ruler feature helped me measure shape sizes and positions precisely.
