In this video, I take you step by step through the process of creating a historical illustration of a legionary of Legio II Augusta during the Hadrianic period, when this Roman unit was stationed at Isca Silurum (Caerleon, Wales).
The reconstruction is based on archaeological finds from the fortress at Caerleon, allowing for the highest possible accuracy. The legionary is shown wearing a Newstead-type lorica segmentata, characteristic of the time, while his Imperial Gallic helmet is inspired by the specimen from Brigetio, Pannonia.
By the 2nd century AD, after more than three military generations in western Britannia, Legio II Augusta had also adopted Celtic influences in its clothing. For this reason, in addition to the traditional bracae, the soldier wears tibialia (leg protectors) and calcei shoes, which had by then replaced the older military sandals (caligae).
