Tourists who come to Russia often have difficulty communicating if they do not speak Russian, because Russians are shy to speak English to them. Why is this so? I am glad that more and more Russians are learning foreign languages, but when I was at school 20 years ago, unfortunately, we were not taught to communicate in English. Basically, we read, translated, completed assignments, passed tests well, wrote essays in English, but we did not did not speak English fluently.
