I’ve been asked several times: What is your tip on becoming a successful filmmaker. I don’t think it’s one easy answer to that, but let’s go back in time and see what I did to reach my dream of becoming a full-time filmmaker.
It all started with the fascination of being able to create my own fantasy worlds. And of course to see my friends fighting infected humans in the goal to save the planet, hehe. I enjoyed using my creativity, making our own low budget scenes.
Use what you have at hand, to enhance the film quality.
Experimenting and learning from your mistakes.
Aim high.
Curiosity. Figure out how things work. This lead me to build my own steadycam and even start a company. We sold over 70 handheld steadycams, called WalKam EasyPro.
Ask friends and family for help, and don’t be afraid of looking stupid.
See peoples talent, and use it.
Join film festivals to meet other filmmakers.
Attend film school to learn from the professionals.
In my case film school gave me contacts, which resulted in being asked to direct my first feature film.
My dream of becoming a feature film director came true, so it was time to set new goals. I still wanted to learn more. How? By making more films, more projects and gain more experience.
Experience is crucial. However, that is not enough. You need to light a fire inside yourself. A fire that will make you go that extra mile, lift that extra stone, because that is how you become a good filmmaker.
Looking back at my first films, I understand what lit my fire. It was having fun with friends, use our creativity and be a part of the projects together.
That’s why I now want to dedicate my time teaching you about filmmaking. I want to share my knowledge with you, include your creativity and make the best film community on the entire internet.
Do you think we can do this together?
